"History is a great teacher. Now everyone knows that the labor movement did not diminish the strength of the nation but enlarged it. By raising the living standards of millions, labor miraculously created a market for industry and lifted the whole nation to undreamed of levels of production. Those who attack labor forget these simple truths, but history remembers them." Martin Luther King Jr.

so iv'e just read on the niagara falls review website that non-unionized associates are being offered buyouts again.
what's keeping the company from laying us off and why are we not being offered buyouts if it appears that we are overstaffed along with duals wearing our uniforms?
not all departments were offered buyouts
One thing you need to remember about the buyouts. In order for us to be included in that program we would have to reduce benefits. In effect be brought down to the level of non unionized associates. The way that it was put to the Bargaining team was like this. They wanted to equalize benefits with non unionized associates, no guaranteed raises, loss of educational reimbursements for non casino related courses. They wanted to include us in the fold with non unionized associates. This would have included bonuses and Buyouts, but you would have lost everything else. The employer assumed the bargaining would take only 2 to 3 days because they thought that we could be bought. Buyouts are not necessarily intended to reduce staff. They are intended to reduce wage and benefits. Many people that took the last Buyout came back as contract at a lower wage with no benefits.
During the last round of bargaining it was very clear that we were not to make any concessions on benefits. In order to get the buyouts we would have had to make concessions on almost every benefit and the employer would have had the right to change them at will, because they would be equalized with non unionized associates.
Another thing is, that our department is not overstaffed, because if it was we would have way more problems than we do. Also, not all departments were offered the Buyouts.
