Ok we are at the end of our first day. We presented our first proposal today and we went over the changes with the employer that we would like to see. The employer is in the process of going over some of our issues and has given there assurances that they will have responses at the next bargaining date. All things considered the say went well.
Also on the positive side the employer has stated that they will begin filling some of the full time positions that have come available. They didn't indicate a date but did imply in the near future. You will see this in the Security officer news letter that is coming out on the Feb 14.
Also I will take this time to address issue of secrecy and the need for confidentiality at the bargaining table. They need for this is necessary because the team needs to be able to operate with out interference from the out side. We as a team cannot discuss with you the things that go on in the caucus room, because they have a funny way of ending up on the other side of the table. Also another reason is, that if we say that the employer is offering this really great thing at the beginning of negotiations and then by the end we don't get that thing, it usually results in very pissed off members. It also prevents the team from getting manipulated by the rumour mill. I will do my best to keep you all informed to the best of my ability. We do have bargaining bulletins that will be coming out when the time is necessary.

They said they would post full time when we were at the bargaining table three years ago.. Good Luck and you guys should know not to trust that employer
I never stated anything about trusting them or not trusting them. I simply passed on something that I could to the members. If it does or dosent happen that is in the control of the employer and subject to our right to grieve it.
i hope we are headed in the right direction here and finally see some full time postings.
ft officers days off and shifts have been getting worse over the past few years and pt officers feel that they are going nowhere.
it would just be nice to see some movement as it would be a benefit for all of us.
can we get a ratio of full time to part time officers worked into the contract or is the hiring of more ft officers strictly up to the company?
In a nutshell we cant force the employer to hire anyone. the business of hiring is a management right as currently stated in our agreement. I dont know how many spots or when this will happen, but I expect in the near futur. It should creat some movement, I just wish I knew how much.
it remains to be seen then. the process of hiring full time should be done by senority like it was when fallsview opened.
will that be worked into the contract as a negotiating point?
hiring by senority to me causes less problems as it should be awarded to the longer serving pt officers.
As I stated in the info article, I cannot discuss what is going to be worked in to the collective agreement or not. However what I will say is that ultimately the responsibility of this being worked into the collective agreement or not, is up to the members. The job of the negotiating team is to use the members voice at the table. What the negotiating team personally wants, and dosent want in the collective agreement , is meaning less. It is the members that decide if the deal stands, not the negotiating team.
true and sorry forgot about the confidentiality of the negotiating process.
No worries, It is always good to ask questions, it helps to maintain transparency of our union, and it keeps you informed. It shows that there is interest, and that what we are doing, is worth it.
